Dr Shan Shan Hou, Research Associate, Cardiff University 

What’s your current role at your institution? 

I am a research associate at the Welsh School of Architecture, Cardiff University. My main responsibilities include working closely with my colleagues to deliver the Swansea demonstration projects and completing the State-of-the art Review on Energy and Environment. I am looking forward to demonstrating home transformations using bio-based materials and a co-design process, as well as to showcase the associated impacts to a wide range of stakeholders.  

Which past experiences have helped you the most in your current role? 

My previous experiences working as an energy consultant, a BREEAM assessor for International New Construction and a LEED AP for Building Design consolidated my knowledge of architectural science and building physics and honed my skills in building energy simulation. My work at the Centre for the Low Carbon Built Environment has furthered my understanding of existing issues, challenges, best practices, and the broader context for the new solutions we are exploring in my current role. 

What excites you about the research in the Transforming Homes project? 

The Transforming Homes project holds immense potential, and I am excited about the new possibilities and impacts it can bring, as well as the opportunity to work with a diverse team across four universities. Low-carbon housing is a key solution for mitigating climate change, increasing low-carbon energy sources and reducing fossil fuel usage. It also helps reduce fuel poverty and improve the built environment. 

The use of bio-based materials offers a new perspective to reducing operational energy and embodied carbon, driving the construction industry forward. The co-design process respects and involves the participation of Local Authorities (LAs) and residents, setting an example of how to co-create homes that both LAs and residents feel proud of and that are fit for a zero-carbon future. I am excited about this project’s potential to inspire and educate younger generations. 

How is your expertise contributing to the Transforming Homes project? 

My expertise in building energy simulation, low-carbon technologies, and whole-house systems-based retrofits is an asset to the Transforming Homes project. It provides robust evidence to support design decision-making and facilitates the successful transformation of existing properties into healthier, more comfortable and zero-carbon homes.
