Real-life examples are being co-designed and delivered in two 1920s-1940s estates in the UK. The demonstration homes are enabling us to work closely with all relevant stakeholders through all stages of the transformation. This is helping us to understand where key opportunities and challenges are, and to work together to provide solutions that can be disseminated more widely to support the whole transformation process.

Information is being gathered from a wide range of sources to inform the co-design of demonstration homes and the design research. Surveys of each demonstration home have been carried out to collect detailed information of the homes to allow digital models to be developed. Monitoring of each home is underway and will continue until after works are complete.
Cardiff University is collaborating with Swansea Council and residents to transform four homes. These 1920s homes are located in the Town Hill estate and are owned by Swansea Council. Swansea Council have been working with Cardiff University since 2017 and are continuing to combine their expertise and practical experience to ensure the homes transformed are fit for future generations.
Partners at University of Bath are collaborating with WeCanMake (WCM) and Knowle West Media Centre (KWMC) to deliver six demonstration homes in the Knowle West area of Bristol. This collaboration benefits from WCM’s and KWMC’s long-term engagement in the Knowle West community.

Information is being gathered from a wide range of sources to inform the co-design of demonstration homes and the design research. Surveys of each demonstration home have been carried out to collect detailed information of the homes to allow digital models to be developed. Monitoring of each home is underway and will continue until after works are complete. This will enable evidence to be provided to demonstrate how the homes and the systems are performing and the resident’s satisfaction. Information collected includes environmental sensors recording temperature, relative humidity and carbon dioxide levels, and energy meter data. One-to-one interviews have been undertaken with residents and local stakeholders.
Design proposals will be implemented in each of the demonstration homes during 2025.
