Richard Hawkins, Technical Innovations Manager, Sevenoaks Modular
What’s your current role at your institution?
My job title is Technical Innovations Manager which involves souring, designing, testing and implementing new materials and technology into the business. More often than not, the justification behind our innovations is to reduce operational and embodied carbon in both our manufacturing facility and in the buildings we construct. Some of the challenges in this are making those changes financially viable or profitable. Often with proactive carbon reduction strategies, there are longer-term efficiencies that result in cost savings. I also support the Business Development team where I fill a technical role, supporting clients with decisions on building fabric and technology, and helping them understand the carbon and performance implications of design approaches.
Which past experiences have helped you the most in your current role?
I graduated with an MSc in Environmental Design of Buildings at the Welsh School of Architecture, Cardiff University which enabled me to make a transition into the construction industry. Prior to this I worked in industrial manufacturing for over 10 years, installing, designing and testing bespoke manufacturing equipment and automation. This role took me into several industry sectors such as medical device manufacturing, automotive and aerospace companies, and the food packaging industry. During this time, I experienced industrial manufacturing at its most advanced. Now, working for an offsite manufacturer, I can confidently support their transition into a manufacturing mindset and yield the benefits of Modern Methods of Construction (MMC).
What excites you about the research in the Transforming Homes project?
Feeling that the work you’re contributing to is making a difference to people that need it is a real privilege, so the social housing element of the project is exciting. I have enjoyed being part of a team with such diverse skillsets. There are the academic and professional elements within the team which I always find an enjoyable bridge to cross. Within those fields are much more specialised areas. We look quite scientifically at the building performance, then the project also thoroughly considers the human element with sociological expertise. It is very interesting to combine the qualitative and quantitative outputs from this research. Then there are members of the team that span several of these elements.
How is your expertise contributing to the Transforming Homes project?
My expertise helps contribute to both the design and delivery of the solutions produced by the project. My background in sustainable construction means I have a good knowledge of a range of natural material and the nuances of their uses in construction. Furthermore, my experience in industrial manufacturing allows me to make recommendations on the feasibility of delivering design solutions at scale to meet the potential volume of retrofit demand.
